What is botulinum toxin and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein that temporarily blocks the connection between nerves and muscles. This relaxes facial muscles, reducing and even preventing lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to reduce sweating. Botox is the original, safest and most-tested brand of botulinum toxin and the only one we use at Wellwin Medical.

What can I expect during Botox treatment?

A plastic surgeon will work with you to formulate a tailor-made treatment plan suited to your needs. You will be asked to make some facial expressions and the muscles for treatment will be identified and marked. After cleansing the area with antiseptic solution small injections will be made. The treatment is quick and usually an anaesthetic is unnecessary, however numbing cream is available if you prefer.

What can I expect after Botox treatment?

There is no real downtime after the treatment. You can resume your usual activities straight away and you will see a visible difference within a few days. Modern injection techniques soften facial lines giving you a more relaxed look whilst still allowing you to smile and use expressions. The duration of results varies between individual but usually ranges between 3 to 6 months.

Are there any side effects to Botox?

No serious side effects have been reported although there maybe some slight swelling and bruising initially. This is easily covered with make-up and disappears after a few days. Very rarely a drooping of the eyelid may occur which should resolve within a few weeks.

What are fillers and how do they work?

Modern cosmetic fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of the skin’s supportive network. As we age we loose this supportive network resulting in a loss of volume and a sunken, hollow appearance. By injecting filler into individually identified sites it restores the skin’s support reducing wrinkles and giving a youthful, more hydrated appearance. Filler is often used to smooth lines in the lower face and to add volume to lips.

What can I expect during treatment with fillers?

You will identify areas with your plastic surgeon that you wish to be treated and together you will choose the most appropriate consistency of filler and formulate a treatment plan suitable for you. Numbing cream is applied and the filler is injected into the identified areas. Results are visible immediately and further filler can be injected to give you the look you desire.

What can I expect after treatment with fillers?

As with Botox, there is no real downtime after the treatment. You can resume your usual activities straight away. Results should be subtle, giving you a natural and more youthful look. Hyaluronic acid is fully biodegradable and naturally removed by the body. Treatments normally last for 18 to 24 months and then begin to gradually soften.

Are there any side effects to filler treatment?

After the treatment there may be some slight swelling and bruising initially. This is easily covered with make-up and disappears after a few days when the results of the treatment can be fully appreciated.
